Hudson - Brushless DC Servo Motor
Hudson - Brushless DC Servo Motor
Teknic's Hudson servo motors are designed to excel in the most demanding OEM applications, and provide benefits including:
Why Hudson?
High Power Density | Designed with advanced 3-D FEA software to optimize magnet shape, stator skew angle, and rotor geometry. You get maximum power in any given motor size to move loads faster, and with more finesse. |
Rugged and Reliable | Brushless design, oversized bearings, high-temperature windings, fault-tolerant encoder design, and extensive testing of every single motor assures you of lasting reliability. |
Responsive | High torque-to-inertia ratio and fast electrical time constant give you the ability to make moves with rapid settling time, precise velocity regulation, and excellent dynamic accuracy. |
Smooth/Quiet | Low torque ripple courtesy of a harmonically-pure back-EMF, combined with individually custom-balanced rotors, gives you ultra-smooth and quiet motion. |
Versatile | High power density and innovative cable management allow Hudson motors to fit into tight spaces. Open-standard design means you can use Hudsons with virtually any brushless servo drive. |
USA Built | Careful design for manufacturability and a large investment in automation allows us to cost-effectively assemble and test Hudsons right here in Rochester, New York, using skilled production technicians. |
Unsurpassed Warranty | Three year warranty period—and it doesn't even start counting down until you take the motor out of your inventory and actually start using it (up to an additional six months from date of purchase). |

We carry a selection of semi-finished Hudson brushless motors that can be completed and shipped in three days. Click to select a model that fits your application.
Can Teknic ship my order in less than 3 days?
Possibly.Teknic is usually able to ship 5 of any Fast-ship Hudson motors within three business days (all Build-to-Order motors have a three-week lead time regardless of order volume). We are able to promise this because we keep a stock of semi-finished assemblies for these specific part numbers. Your order is what triggers the final assembly, full test, and shipment of that specific product. This production method allows Teknic to promise a consistent, short lead time for the most popular Hudson servo motor models.
Depending on the exact manufacturing and order details, we may be able to build the order in less than three days. If that's the case, we won't hold off from shipping earlier. We just can't promise to ship anything in less than three business days. (And remember to add the shipping transit time to estimate the actual arrival date of your order.)
Souriau TRIM TRIO® parts required to build a motor cable have variable lead times. Please check with Souriau stocking distributors (such as Digikey) to ensure component lead times meet your requirements. Even if a TRIM TRIO® is preferred in your final assembly, for faster prototyping, select the Molex pigtail and the Teknic-offered Molex motor extension cable.
For extra protection beyond the standard double-sealed ball bearings, an optional dynamic shaft seal is available. Hudson's high-quality shaft seal is made with a specially formulated elastomer to provide a minimal compression set, excellent high temperature properties, low friction and wear, and improved chemical resistance.
The motor shaft will be IP66K/IP67 rated with the shaft seal.
The standard shaft diameter for NEMA 23 Hudson servo motors is 0.375 inch (9.525 mm). This larger diameter provides better radial load capability and better torsional stiffness (and hence better dynamic performance) than the 0.250 inch (6.350 mm) shaft option. In some cases, however, for compatibility with gearheads, brakes, and other mechanical components, a 0.250 inch (6.350 mm) shaft is desirable and offered as an option.
Hudson motors can be configured with one of the three connector options:
Connectors | Motor Body IP Rating | Connector Sealing |
---|---|---|
M12 (on-body) | IP66K/IP67 | IP66K/IP67 |
Souriau TRIM TRIO® bayonet (pigtail) | IP50 | IP65 (metal nut/bayonet) |
Molex Mini-Fit Jr.™ (pigtail) | IP50 | Not rated |
Teknic's motors have an optional shaft seal with the following shaft ratings:
Shaft Seal | Shaft Rating |
---|---|
Yes | IP66K/IP67 |
No | IP40 |
IP Ratings, or Ingress Protection Code, are an EN/IEC 60529 standard that define enclosure protection against dust and water. The first number defines the level of dust protection (0-6). The second number defines the level of liquid protection (0-9K). Below is a summary of IP tests relevant to Teknic's Hudson Servos:
IP Level | Effective Size | Description |
---|---|---|
0 | No dust protection | No protection |
1-4 | 2 in. down to 0.039 in. | Protection against increasingly smaller particles |
5 | Dust protection | Ingress may occur, but not in significant quantity to interfere with safe operation |
6 | Dust tight | No ingress tested both in a vacuum environment and 8 hours of airflow |
All of Teknic's motors meet the IP levels 5 or 6 for dust protection. Teknic's Hudson motors with M12 On-body connectors meet the dust protection rating "6".
IP Level | Water Pressure | Test Description |
---|---|---|
0 | No water protection | No protection |
1-4 | Dripping to splashing | Tested with IPX3 spray nozzle with no shield |
5 | Water jets | 30 kPa pressure at 3 meters for at least 3 minutes in any direction |
6 | Powerful water jets | 100 kPa pressure at 3 meters for at least 3 minutes in any direction |
6K1 | 10x higher pressure jets | 10x higher pressure (1,000 kPa) |
7 | Immersion up to 1 meter | No ingress when immersed at 1 meter for 30 minutes. |
1This test is specified in DIN 40050 and not IEC/EN 60529. A product rated with a higher rating (e.g. IP67) is not guaranteed to meet the "6X" requirement. For components that meet multiple tests, both will be listed with a slash (e.g. IP66K/IP67).
Teknic's Hudson with pigtails are not rated for any liquid protection. When ordered with the shaft seal, Hudson motors with M12 on-body connectors are rated for both 6K and 7.
Products that are rated for the liquid immersion rating (7) are rated to withstand immersion up to 30 minutes without ingress. However, they are not rated for long-term operation while submerged.
Teknic's Hudson with M12 on-body connectors are not to be operated when submerged.
There are some applications where motors are exposed to caustic washdown, particularly in food processing facilities. This is not specified by IEC/EN 60529 (IP ratings), and often requires smooth, stainless steel housings to prevent both particulate build-up and corrosion due to caustic chemical exposure.
Teknic's Hudson motors are not food grade rated, but many customers have successfully built them into low cost enclosures as an inexpensive alternative to food grade rated motors.
Hudson servo motors use an encoder disk made of photo-lithographically etched stainless steel, not glass, so it can't shatter and is concentrically clamped to the shaft for better accuracy and reliability. Choose between four encoder resolutions with differential outputs for improved signal integrity.
For the front motor flange to be IP66K/IP67 rated, the shaft seal is required. The shaft seal is not available on the selected 1/4" shaft option. Do you want to change the shaft diameter to 3/8" and add the shaft seal option?
For the front motor face to be IP66K/IP67 rated, the shaft seal is required. The shaft seal option has automatically been selected.
The shaft seal option (required for the motor shaft to be IP66K/IP67 rated) is only available with the standard 3/8" shaft diameter. Do you want to change the shaft diameter to 3/8" and add the shaft seal?
Shaft seal option is required for the motor front face to meet the IP66K/IP67 rating with the M12 On-Body connector option.
