Planetary Gearbox Advantages

Higher Output Torque

Gearboxes proportionally increase the peak and continuous torque of any stepper or servo motor by their internal gear ratio. This mechanical leverage is often required for high inertia loads or applications that require high applied forces.

Lower Reflected Inertia

Gearboxes cut the load inertia from the motor by the square of the gear ratio. This allows servos to accelerate, brake, and settle faster for tighter motion profiles.

Increased System Resolution

Planetary gearboxes effectively increase system resolution by their gear ratio. For example, a 10:1 gearbox on a motor will magnify the motor's positioning resolution by a factor of 10 at the output shaft.

Robust Output Mechanics

Planetary gearboxes incorporate a large-diameter output shaft supported by paired, heavy-duty bearings—typically larger than those in the companion brushless motor. This design carries higher radial and axial loads, so belts, pulleys, or pinions can mount directly to the gearbox without an extra support bearing. The end result is often a smaller footprint, fewer parts, and a faster, more cost-effective mechanical assembly.

The dynamic torque-speed curve above demonstrates the dramatic output torque increase achieved by adding a 3:1 precision gearbox to a NEMA23 ClearPath servo motor. As you can see upon clicking the button above, the gearbox transmits several times the motor's native torque.

The above graphic demonstrates the theoretical increased system resolution achieved by adding a 10:1 gearbox to a motor (ignoring gearbox mechanical backlash).

Another hypothetical example, where we do account for gearbox backlash, is to analyze a belt stage being directly driven by a half-stepping (400 µsteps/rev) stepper motor. If the driven pulley is 4 inches in diameter, the best-case theoretical linear resolution would be 0.031 inches/step (π x D / 400). Incorporating a 7:1 planetary gearbox (and factoring for 5 arc minutes of internal gearbox backlash) would improve the system resolution to ~0.008 inches/step—a roughly 4x improvement.
